This is a very old and hot debate. Simply put, AWT is draws its components
based on calls to the native OS graphical widgets. So your code will not
look
the same from platform to platform and will drive you crazy. Especially when
you are trying to do event handling across platforms.
Whereas Swing is pure Java. It draws its' components from scratch. So it's
truely platform independent. But Swing components are heavy weights and
slower.
New graphical widgets have been developed by IBM, called SWT. These
components are light weight and somewhat based on the native OS widgets.
But it is said that it does not suffer the shortcommings of AWT; wow, light
weight and platform independent. What else can you ask for?
I haven't used SWT myself. Does anybody know if their claims are true?
thanks.

Yes. It is smaller and simpler.

How about:
Java or Woodworking
Java or Photography
Photography or Woodworking
Sorry, poor attempt at humour :-)
I am not sure how you are posting but do you realise that you have
cross-posted to both woodworking and photography groups?
<greeting>
Hello out there in Woodwork and Photography land .... bet you all now know
what is the difference between AWT and Swing ;-)
</greeting>
You probably want to try posting to the correct group if you can. There is
also a regularly posted FAQ that explains the use of this (and I think
other) Java groups so that you do not waste people's time cross-posting to
certain groups.
Go here and search FAQ

Hi Roedy.
Long time no read.
I miss your posts in alt.politics.bush
I'm reading you in rec.woodworking of all places.<g>
How have you been?
Dave, just a fellow Canadian fan.

Yes, if you need a simple GUI without any complex components like
tables or trees. But be aware that the AWT is quite limited, so
that you will think about replacing it by Swing very soon. And
the AWT does not have Actions.
> Or has it been completely replaced by SWING?
BTW: Swing does not replace the AWT, it builds up on its basic
structure.

No problem :)

Hope this helps - Stephan

Ahhh, you must be one of those foaming at the mouth, gun totin' Yankee
right wingnuts I hear tell about!<g>
You do understand that you likely represent less than .0001% of the world's
population don't ya.
And the rest of them are gunnin' for you, or they soon will be!
That's why Nero fiddled while Rome burned. Picking up his sword would have
futile. The world had spoken. Rome had to go.
America's turn is coming son.
Sadly you will take us Canadians down with you.:-(

Doesn't it make you proud!
