tool trunk/chest design issues - need help

Hey all,

I'm trying to design a tool chest and I'm having trouble with the joinery
details of the lid. It's a small chest, 12 x 12 x 30" with the top 3 inches
as the lid. I'm dovetailing the sides, with the bottom captured in a dado. I
was thinking of capturing the top with a dado too, but I don't want a lip -
I want the top to be flush. All of the joinery is being done by hand so I
don't want to use biscuits or anything like that. Any help would be
appreciated.

Thanks,
Eide

cut a rabbet around the top edge of the lid so that there is a lip
sticking out at the bottom edge of the top : ^ )
set that lip into a dado in the sides so that the top of the sides is
flush with the top of the top. that way the lid panel will be able to
float.

Thanks for the replies everyone, how much do I have to take wood movement
into consideration. I'm building out of pine and the top will be about 12 x
12 x 30. Will the box joint or dovetail option be too stressful for a panel
that size out of pine?

If you are doing your dovetails by hand then put interlocking dovetails
all the way around the top. It will look soooooo cool.

I've thought about how I would do this several times in the past. The best idea
I'm came up with is to box-joint the top to the sides.
I figured it will be very difficult to pull off but indeed would look unique. I
would then round over the top edges with a 1/4 or 3/8 round over bit.
