Folks -
I think others have mentioned it, but by responding to the trolls, the "RE:
(OFFENSIVE SUBJECT LINE) still pops up even tho' one may have blocked the
orignal offensive sender. The net result is that the offensive subject is
still there, and frankly, these are a bit much to have staring at you.....
EVERYONE, PLEASE...... Don't respond!!! If you wish to report to their ISP,
AMEN!!!, but DON'T respond on the newsgroup. Those using OE can remove the
offensive sender's messages by clicking on the message (you don't have to
open it, even) then going to "Messages" in the menu, and clicking "Block
Sender". This way, their offensive messages NEVER show up, and if no one
responds, we don't have to look at the responses, which also include those
offensive subject lines.
I *Don't* want to block out messages from my brethren here, so complain to
the senders' ISP.... The rest of us probably ALREADY agree with you, so.....
Rant over, thanks....

Hey, Scratch, get a copy of NewsProxy (Nfilter) and configure it. Email me
privately if you need help setting it up (use the addy in my sig line). In
combination with the killfilters in my newsreader (NewsExpress), it's very
effective at eliminating the worthless junk before it ever gets to me. I
haven't seen *any* porn posts on the wreck for a couple weeks at least, and
the amount of crap I see is very, very low.

You'd even have to say it was (almost) cheap.
Maybe I should sell a kidney ?

Killing trolls is easy in theory. If nobody responds and everyone hits
"block sender", the troll ceases to exist effectively. He can post from now
to doomsday and nobody sees his posts until he changes his name. Which he
will. But, do not respond and use "block sender" for the new name and the
troll again effectively ceases to exist until he changes his address again.
Which he will. But eventually if he gets no response he stops posting. His
sole reason to exist is to get a reaction. If he doesn't he eventually will
move on to greener pastures. It's like using a screw driver to try to drive
a 60 penny nail into 8/4 oak without even having the benefit of a pilot
hole. Eventually you give up because you are not having any success.
Reporting is fine but in most cases a waste of time. However, announcing
that you reported him is notifying the troll that he got a reaction which
only encourages him to continue especially if his ISP doesn't take action
which most don't bother to do so.
In theory, killing trolls is easy. In practice, people have to respond and
voice their indignation. That feeds the trolls and he thrives.
One of the regulars here quit coming a few months back. Last week in an
email he said he was starting to read again. This morning he said he was
gone again. Too much crap to wade through to get to anything. I'm in the
same shape. I spend a ridiculous amount of time filtering the crap out so I
can see what's left and it just doesn't seem worth it anymore. Looks like I
filter at least a third the posts out trying to keep the garbage out and
still have to wade through a bunch of crap. And for some reason lately it
takes teranews between 30 seconds and 3 or 4 minutes to open individual
posts much of the time. This seems to be peculiar to rec.woodworking and
not other newsgroups I subscribe to. Anyway, it's just getting to be a lot
of effort for very little enjoyment these days.

It would be hard to not improve on Outlook.
Gravity is a good one. I recommend it because it's a good
program and it's the one I use. There also are other good
ones. Agent is frequently mentioned as a good one.

I downloaded and paid for Gravity years ago when it was
shareware. It's now freeware, but it would still be nice to
send a donation to Tom if you like it.

FWIW, I get amusement out of reading (but NOT replying to...) some of
the posts. I always like the morons that have conversations with
themselves by using different IDs to post multiple times in a
thread... (C:

I use Agent but it won't filter body text, the easiest way
to do it. I just reinstalled Nproxy and the crossposted
spooge is gone. It causes a time delay on downloads, but
it's truly worth it, especially for the free price.
I use a registered copy of Agent (only $29) and have been very happy
with it. It will download just the message header instead of the
message like some seem to complain about. Installing kill filters is
just a couple of mouse clicks away.
As far as the trolls, I strongly aree with just ignoring them. If you
answer with a complaint, you're just doing what they want. If no one
responds to their garbage, they will slowly fade away.
