Floods of this sort are typically generated and posted by software,
typically operating from numerous compromised ('cracked')
machines. They are also typically widely corssposted so that
naive respondents who flame them by hitting 'reply' add to the
noise.
The object of the exercise is typically to disrupt one newsgroup,
often new.admin.net-abuse.email, where people exchange information
and ideas for fighting spam.

This particular attack is by someone who wants to disrupt/destroy the
news group creation and management process that is being debated in
news.groups right now. As for motive, I can only speculate, but mental
illness almost certainly is in play.

To who?
You could try asking your news provider (comcast, it appears) if they
can block it. Good luck.

Yes, because we cannot hear or see them stomping on the floor and throwing a
temper tantrum. Another case where sparing the rod and spoiling the child
has not worked again.

Is there a way to get them kicked off the net? IT looks like they are
posting through a service located in China. Has any one tried reported this
abuse?
It's called insanity. There is always a small percentage of people who are
insane in all cultures and nations. Unfortunately some of these people take
advantage of a free society that permits uncensored posts to these
newsgroups.
Don't waste time trying to figure out what their motives are. They don't
have any.

Man, is that even correct grammar? Anyway, consider the choice of
either being YOU and having to put up with THEM ... or being THEM!
This jerk has to wake up every day, look in the mirror, and sadly ...
see that he is still himself. If that isn't enough punishment, I don't
know what is.
But thank the gods for spam filters!

Doggone it. I deleted every one singly and they'll all back. Then I
remember I killfiled Doug and Dave so put them back on because the real
ones are getting filtered out. I wrote that I hesitated to dl some .exe
filtering software because I don't know anyone in this group very well.
The board will be so flooded again, that it has ruined this group for me
for now. A$$holes. It causes my posts and threads I'm following to be
scrolled off the list.

You're using OE ... If you don't want to go to the trouble to download and
configure News Proxy, simply go to Tools|Message Rules|News|Click on "Where
the subject line contains specific words", and add ALL the offensive words,
one at a time.
Then click on either delete, ignore or "marked as read". Then OK/Apply
When you have VIEW set up to "hide read or ignored messages", you will not
see them at all.

Yes. I copied and saved it. Do you think I want to go through all that
today? One false move and I spend the rest of the day or week trying to
get myself out of it. System restore is now all it's cracked up to be
either BTW. It is Mother's Day. I am a mother and also an old lady
now. I don't want to risk destabilizing my news and computer, so I have
to proceed with extreme caution every time I install something new. Can
you understand that?
And thank you.

Nope ... day before yesterday it was outside of Tehran, Iran ... tomorrow it
will be somewhere else. You learn to filter, or put up with it periodically.
It has been that way for over the 15 years I've been messing with Usenet and
it won't change unless we start putting idiots, along with their parents,
out of their collective misery when they are identified shortly after
diapers. ;)

Of course they want something. It's called attention. They're so socially
deprived that even negative attention is acceptable. And if that attention
is limited to a bunch of people in a newsgroup getting upset, then they'll
take that in lieu of something else.
> I can not imagine spending hours posting something that has absolutely no

Unfortunately, it only takes a minute or two with the appropriate posting
software and putting in some names for a send-to and even that's not
necessary.

I'm out of patience for now. I did that. I couldn't see all the words
while the window was open. Didn't know if I got the syntax for the
rules right. Then went back to add as many other words as I could and
got stymied. It put them in quotes and I couldn't figure out how to add
to the list. Don't want to set up a new rule. I just don't feel like
dealing with any more of this today and thank you but please don't try
to talk me through it now.

They do want something: They want the hate and discontent they
can create, and thrive on it. A lot of times, if the attacks
last, they are out to destroy the newsgroup via dos attack. It
seldom works. They just never grew up and are antisocial beings
with few friends so ...
As for spending hours writing it, they don't: They mostly use
automated software to create and send those missives. It's just
an address and a keyclick to them.

That program appears to be safe; I downloaded it and installed it this morning.
Here's what they assume you'll know but don't tell you:
1. You need to manually add NewsProxy to your startup folder. Right click your
Start button, select Explore. Navigating down the left hand window to
C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name\Start Menu\Programs\Startup. In the right
hand window, right click and select New Shortcut. Assign the shortcut to
wherever you have NewsProxy.exe installed. This will cause NewsProxy to start
every time you reboot your computer.
2. In Outlook Express, go to Tools > Accounts > News > Your news server
account. Click on the Server tab and note the server name. You'll need it
later. Now delete it and type in "localhost". That is one word; no spaces; no
periods; no quotation marks. Just localhost.
3. Start up NewsProxy from your start menu, go to Edit > Configuration. On the
first (general) tab select "use regular expressions". Leave everything else
alone.
4. On the Netwook tab, change the server name to whatever your news server was
originally in Outlook Express (remember, I told you you'd need it). Leave
everything else alone. Click on Apply, OK.
5. Obtain Doug's preloaded troll filter from the same site where you got the
executable program (read his original message down near the bottom for details
of where and how). Even though the filter's name is nfilter.dat, it is
basically a text file and can be read with Notepad. Do a cut and paste of its
contents into your original nfilter.dat in the NewsProxy folder or you could
just overwrite the original file... it doesn't matter. If you choose to use
Notepad, be sure to save the changes before you exit.
6. Start NewsProxy from your start menu.
7. Start Outlook Express.
8. Enjoy. Trust me, the crap will go down the toilet with the rest of the
turds.
9. After the first 8 steps here, just be sure NewsProxy is running *before* you
start Outlook Express. Rebooting your computer will automatically load it. If
it's not loaded first, you'll get an error message from OE saying it can't find
the news server (remember, now it's localhost, not news-server.carolina.rr.com
or whatever you use. The programs *have* to work together. Also, note that
NewsProxy will have zero effect on your email. It's only going to communicate
with your news server.
Got it?
