It's finally happened, I've blocked ALL senders to the rec...

Folks -

Good lord! Does ANYONE know where I can find a newsgroup that discusses
WOODWORKING?

Not JEWS, PENISES, CAMERA SHOPS, HOMOSEXUAL LOVE, YOUR RECENT OPERATIONS &
DULCE dE LECHE RECIPIES....

I *DONT* respond to the trolls, and I am SO tired of seeing all of the cross
posts and "witty" remarks that just keep those oh-so OFFENSIVE subject lines
wafting under my nose. I tried the filter route, but it didn't work. Why
should we have to jump through hoops just to get or give some simple advice.
I hate to see another enjoyable pastime just become another pain in the ass.
I already have plenty of those, and I don't have to go looking for them.

I just want to read about my online friends and their woodworking - the
projects, the gloats, and yes, the FRIENDLY flames.... This group USED to
be such a joy. It may not mean much, but logging on in the evenings for
about 20 minutes was often the high point of my day.

So, for all you ASSHOLES out there, you WON. Hope you all ROT in hell.

John Moorhead
Lakeport, CA

PS: Go ahead and spam me, the yahoo account goes over quota every day from
spam - it'll be gone soon too..... again, ROT!

Nfilter has been doing a pretty good job, but it seems to take case into
account, which I wasn't aware of at first. PITA updating filters, but the
alternative was much worse.

I've found that virtually all of the latest deluge of anti-JOAT
sex/body-function crap is coming through *news.maxwell.syr.edu*. Try
filtering that string in the "PATH" area and your NG should get back to
normal.

Start using a couple of the bulletin board sites.
I read two and usually just look at the subject lines of the REC.
and mark everything read. This is the first response I've thought
worth while. :-)

It says (in part):
"The old definition of a Troll is one who posts to generate
the maximum number of follow ups. "

"The old definition?" Hmm... Back in the day, the troll was the message,
not the one who posted it, and it referred to messages intended to elicit
a knee-jerk response from one or more group regulars. From troll, meaning
to fish by trailing a baited line.

Cheers,

Well, that's not quite what I said. I said the term troll, as used to
refer to a certain type of post, came from the word troll, meaning to
fish by trailing bait. Perhaps I could have been more clear by specifying
the noun form of the word, meaning the act of trolling.

BTW, I didn't define it that way. I am merely reporting how the word was
used in earlier days on USENET.

> ... troll is usually meant to describe a person.

This is true nowadays. Of course, we have many better terms for these
kinds of people (G). Troll sounds odd to me in this context, and I think
it is less meaningful than the earlier usage. I believe the word has
taken on its current meaning from repeated use by those unfamiliar. Such
is language.

In Outlook Express

Click on a message from the offender.
Click on "Message"
Click on "Block Sender"
Click on "Yes" to remove all messages from the offender.

This ain't rocket science.

Once, some time ago my kill filter some how got reset. That was before this
latest deluge of troll shit and there had only been two or three who had
made into it. Now with the ever growing list I hope it does not get reset
again. It is a joy to almost be able to read for the pleasure of the wreck
again.

Can OE filter for words in the subject? That's one of the main ways
that I filter.

I also set up a filter for a domain...for the occasional guy that
changes his name on a regular basis. They can change their name
easily...but its difficult to change their address on a regular basis.
This works well for the guys posting thru Google, etc.

Filters are your friend! lol

Larry -

I followed the FAQ on filtering for OE to the letter, and had NOTHING but
trouble and a waste of a chunk of time trying to set it up and then trying
to fix it to the typical end with standard Windows OS frustrations - and for
this, you think I'm an idiot. Fine.

The result? The trolls win, you win and I'm an idiot because I expressed my
absolute frustration, and shared it, at having lost what has been a valuable
woodworking resource in my education as a woodworker over the last several
years. I would also like to think that my contributions have helped other
woodworkers and been a part of what makes woodworking such an enjoyable
avocation. As for "encouraging" the trolls, it doesn't look like they need
it - they're plenty happy to volunteer.

Big of you.

I'm not sure why it doesn't work for you, John. Maybe its because yer
usin' OE.

I don't see any of the garbage yer talkin' about. Every now and
again, one will get thru...but very seldom.

You might try a different news reader. No offense, but OE isn't EVEN
a news reader! lol

Anyway...good luck.

From your definition 'meaning to fish', troll could neither be a
person or a post. YOUR troll...'fish'... is a verb.

In reality, troll is usually meant to describe a person. His post...a
troll post...is his tool to accomplish an end.

Most trolling perpetuates because the folks answering a post don't pay
attention...and they post to every newsgroup in the original, trolling
post. Most of these uninformed, lax folks are OE users. If we could
eliminate OE, we could probably eliminate a lot of problems on the
Net. lol

You should ONLY post to the group yer readin'...NOT to every group in
the header.

My theory is that the SPAM is being generated by someone who owns a web

About a month ago I spent an hour typing all the curse words I could think
of into my filter and blocked about five user names at the same time. That
was all it took to take the group back to where it was a couple months ago.
I even got some juvenile joy out of typing in all the slang I could think
of. All the people replying to the trolls and posting messages like yours
are what is bugging me now. I don't know if there is a single news reader
out there without some type of filtering capability. Why can't some of you
spend some of the energy and time you use up on bitching and SET UP A
FRIGGIN FILTER?
