How did the system for sizing nails in hardware stores originate?

i've always been interested in finding out where, when, how, the
sizing system for nails came about. hopefully you experts out there
can fill me in. where did it come from, who figured it out, when.
etc. thanks.

Nov. issue of Wood magazine covers this (page 28) as well as a link in another
post.

It was the cost per hundred nails.

it dates from the days when nails were made one at a time, by hand, by
a blacksmith....
