The gas price at the local place in Watts, OK is $3.99. I rather suspect
it's not a gas station any longer.

Are you sure that's not a 2? Or Diesel prices? For some reason, diesel is
running close to $1 more than gas.

However, diesels increased mpg makes it very competitive with gasoline
price wise.

Not sure why it's so high, other than a money grab. Years ago before
everything went up it was always less than gas.

Yeah - I doubt anywhere other than the high-tax states of Cal
and NY are over $3 now.

$2.44 in Baytown. Odd, that's usually the cheapest in the Houston
area.
(observed last weekend: $2.45 in Austin, $2.44 at Baytown, $2.54
in Opalousas, $2.35 in Gulfport, $2.69 at Pensacola, same in Ocala,
$2.89 in Fort Lauderdale. Time was when TX would be the cheapest,
but for the last several years MS has always been lowest).

That's not so. Years ago it was, when diesel was almost a
leftover from gasoline refining, but with today's requirements
for low-sulfur fuels, and much of the crude production being
sour oils, the refining for diesel is more complicated than
it used to be.
> Stores much

That's sorta not right also...there is a winter diesel blend
(to stop it gelling in low temps), but beyond that there's
more seasonality to diesel demand, because home heating oil
comes from the same refinery circuit (so making more heating
oil reduces the amount of diesel made).
> Not sure why it's so high, other than a money grab. Years ago before

I think there's three reasons. One is the higher cost of
refining, one is higher taxes, and the last one is that
relatively few people pay the pump price - most trucking
firms have contracts with the major suppliers that give
them a rebate on the fuel price, and other big users buy
in bulk on long-term contracts.

You are right. Price should be $2.749, last Sunday it was $2.999. Diesel
is about $1.00 more that gas in our location as well.
