Yup. If there's not a .binaries at the end of the group name, attachments
will (and should be) stripped.

Well, the problem is (speaking from the "server guy" perspective here)
that a certain amount of space is allocated for Usenet articles. Even
a small-ish image will take up more space than dozens of text articles,
and if you get someone posting a 500K image (not unusual by any means),
it'll take up enough room to displace hundreds of articles.
From a user perspective, this means that text articles will expire (fall
off the server) sooner, because the room has to come from somewhere. It's
also not unheard of for newsadmins to drop a newsgroup that gets binaries
posted to it frequently. The easiest solution from an administration
standpoint (because it's fully automatable) is to strip binary attachments,
or to drop the message they were attached to entirely.
If anyone wants to post a picture or three and they don't have a
webserver, drop me an email and I'll put it up for you. I wonder if
a webpage that archives the images into the woodworking images binaries
group would be useful?

Depends upon the news server -- some strip binaries in non-binary groups,
others don't.

It ain't "this group". The alt.binaries groups are designated for this
purpose. Most ISP's will trash a binary attachment post to a non binary
group. Specifically, there are two other groups - (ABPW)
alt.binaries.pictures.woodworking and (ABPF)
alt.binaries.pictures.furniture that you should use to post pictures and
other binary attachments. The alternative is to put your stuff on a web
site and post the link here or in the other mentioned groups.
