I assume by the level of automation you're describing that your dust
collector will be connected to a collection piping network. Turning
the dust collector on and off automatically doesn't help much when you
still have to contend with opening and closing blast gates to each
tool. This is usually a manual operation, unless you spend tons of
money on solenoid operated blast gates.
I use the long ranger remote control and find it works out very well
for me. I would not want to use automatic turn on/off connected to a
power tool because there are some tools I switch frequently in use
(such as a drill press). Its hard on a dust collector to start and
stop it frequently. As an example, with my long ranger, I start the
collector and leave it running while punching a bunch of holes with the
drill press.
