14" bandsaw

Ok it has been awhile since I posted on usenet. But I used to and it seems
a good place to seek and share advice.

I am looking to purchase a 14" bandsaw. I'm in Southern California. Any
recommendations or deals in the area here I should consider? I cannot
afford super expensive. It would be great to pick up a used one for less,
but I've searched and it is hard to find a used one.

Thanks,
Grant

Not so. Most bandsaw blade makers will make customs sizes. Suffolk Machine
for one, I think Woodhaven will Lee Valley sells a kit for brazing blades
and you can buy 100' coils.

If you do good in LV, you can buy any saw you want!

This looks like the higher priced Delta. If it is, the retail was in the
$750 to $800 range. It would be a good buy near the starting price. In
good shape, it could easily bring $600.

There is an adjustment on the back of the saw that sets it for use from
anything from 92 to 93.5.

I'm in So Cal so San Jose is too far. Need so be not more than a few hours
each way. Driving to San Jose would cost me near $50 each way and take
14hrsRT. Thanks though. I'm half way between LA and SD.

They aren't bad saws despite the guides, table fixings and
lack-o-riser block. Here's another one but it looks like
they're moving farther away from you.

Edwin,
Yes, I'm not going to ship. I'll see what happens with that auction. The
seller auctions seem to gather alot of bids and higher prices for some
reason, I don't know.

Ever heard of a Precision Packard?

that is possible and still get a good saw.

Where in SOCal?
First, There is a woodworking show next weekend at Fairplex. You should be
able to get better than sale price on tools there.

Second, I bounced back and forth over 14" bandsaws before deciding on the
16" Jet. Man, am I glad I did. It was well worth the extra money. (Cry
now, laugh later.) My neighbor has a Delta 14". Good saw, but now comes
over to my shop asking, "Will you resaw this for me?"

With the addition of a new 1"-3tpi blade from a local blade maker, it cuts
like butter. 8/4 - 10"x30" Purpleheart - 3/16" slices- finish to 1/8" -
perfect.

I don't see them listed as a exhibitor. Good thing.

I have seen the Grizz - I'd pass. Life is to short to buy cheap tools. My
late Father-in-law, was a tightwad. I decided that the Grizz TS was going
to be just as good as the Unisaw. I traveled up to Apple Valley to put it
together for him. After hours of, fighting this pile of junk, rethreading
un-tapped holes, replacing cheap bolts that snapped with little effort, ect.
I finally got it working and *close* to level and square. We let it run for
a few minutes to settle in the he ran a few pieces thru to test its' power.
Well then the motor started to make noise, then more noise, then smoke!

He sent it back, bought the Unisaw, used it for five years. Now my
brother-in-law uses it at his shop almost daily.
Sorry about the rant but I don't want to hear from you later that you hate
it.

Note to wreak, Save the flames about how you have a Grizz and they are fine.
Just admit you shop at at Harbor Freight and are willing to sacrifice
quality price. Ask yourself, would I be proud to hand this tool down to my
kids?

I LOVE my Grizzly G0555. I have never used the Delta but a quick glance at
the one in Lowes assures me that for less money (shipping was $55 but
between sales tax and the lower $375 price) I got MORE saw. I purchased
the riser kit at the same time. I have resawed 9.5" hard maple, oak,
walnut and more with very little trouble. I use Olsen AllPro and MVP
blades.

My only complaints are that the tension spring is too weak to tension a
3/4" blade. What I've learned is that I don't need a 3/4" blade to resaw
successfully. I still intend on buying a heavier spring in the future.
FWIW, the Delta won't tension the 3/4" blade either.

The other complaint is that it is pretty hard to get to the bottom guides
with the allen wrench. I change blades a lot and I can swap a blade and
readjust everything in about 5 mins so it isn't a big deal but that is the
part that takes the longest.

The fence is nice but you will want to build a taller attachment for
support if you do resawing thicker than about 6". The dust collection
works great. It is quiet and smooth. The quick release tensioner is
great, if you remember to use it.

As that link shows you, assembly is not bad at all, the saw is assembled
completley, just put the base together and mount it. The one flaw they
point out about the guide arm not centering has been fixed on my saw. They
now use a bearing and spring. Believe me because I was on my hands and
knees looking for it one night :-)

Dan, You are correct, it was well over five years ago. Thanks.

Here is how I honestly feel about it. Grizzly gets one bite at the apple.
They failed miserably and it was none to easy to get them to take it back
either. They wanted to... never mind, its a painful story but you get the
idea.

I learned long ago, cheap tools are cheap for a reason. If Grizzly is
making a high quality tool now, then fine, go for it. But from what I have
seen first hand, they still have a few more steps to go.

I'm not sure what you mean by "common." It is not bimetal or any special
Swedish steel and it isn't made from previously before unknown elements
recovered from the Roswell UFO crash. It's just a 6tpi 3/8" blade that

Get ceramics for it. Especially if you'll be doing a lot of work with wide
blades. I'm a turner, and they control the blade beautifully when the old
cool blocks just wore the left upper and lower like crazy.

Below 1/4, and possibly at it, you'll want soft ones.

"Normal" use shows me with 1/2" 3TPI for resawing and green wood large, 3/8"
4 TPI for green wood small, 3/8 and 1/4" 6 TPI for general purpose use, but
I own an oscillating spindle sander. For bandsaw boxes we use a 12 TPI 1/4
at the school, I've got a 3/16 with perhaps 14 at home.

Oh yes, as I've mentioned more than once, the kids stand in line at school
to get to the old Delta (and now the new) versus the Grizzly, which is an
inconsistent performer. You did good.

By the way, I have a Grizzly G0555 and it comes with a 92 1/2" blade! There
are references to it having a 93 1/2" which is pretty much standard for a
14" BS but that isn't what the Grizzly uses. When you add the riser block it
then uses a 105" blade which is standard with most of the other 14" BS that
have a 12" throat.

FWIW, I don't think Grizzly tools are all THAT cheap. <G>

The $375 + $55 band saw compares to band saws in the $400-500 range,
not $850 saws. Since you have no dealer support, are jumping through
hoops to deal with truckers, and are buying it sight unseen, a premium
has to be offered to the buyer. A good dealer has value, true value
isn't free.

Many of the "free" accessories I've seen that were included with any
brand of Chiwanese machine tool are Harbor Freight quality.

There are other Chiwanese brands, like Woodtek and Sunhill that sell
Grizzly quality at the same price. Jet, General, Rigid, and Delta
sell imports at the midpoint to bottom of their lines that include
local dealer support.

FWIW, Grizzly may have the biggest advertising budget in the business,
EVERY magazine I have, including trades, like "Woodshop News", has
multiple ads. Grizzly usually buys back covers, inside front and back
covers, and sometimes centerfolds, all of which are the most expensive
ads in the issue.

While most of these Chiwanese tools are suitable for the tasks they
were designed for, overall you do get what you pay for. Every time
I've thought of ordering a Grizzly tool, with the exception of the
spindle / disc combo sander, I've found an almost identical tool, at
nearly the same price, locally.

I believe that the absolute best values are on ebay. There are two
American made Powermatic 14" saws currently on ebay, both are relatively
cheap, and vastly better than any import you can buy.

Yep. And you DID mention that it was at least five years ago, probably
more than that if your brother-in-law is now happily using the unisaw.

When I researched before buying my Griz 1022, I found a lot of posts

that shift to mean Grizzly had managed to get their QC a little more

like the fact that I know that saw inside and out. But that's me. :-)
The problems I have with my projects are due to my inexperience, not
the saw.

Hope you don't consider that a flame. I tried hard not to make it one.
I think the current Giz products are solid frameworks that still need
some tweaking to get them up to par, but although they apparently used
to be junk, I don't think they are anymore.

So I'm not going to feel bad at all about handing this saw off to my
son-in-law when I have the wherewithal to purchase a unisaur and a
decent place to put it.

I can see this being true. I know some cyclists and musicians that
spend much more time restoring old stuff than they do using it. They
get a ton of satisfaction out of getting something from the scrap heap
into nearly new condition, with original parts.

Thanks Jo,
I've did not know about the Grizzly. Took a look online just now and it
looks like it comes stock with some good features.

The Delta 28-276 that was $399 at Lowes, I'm not sure exactly yet what
features it comes with. It was stickered "made in USA" on it, but I've
searched Google and some were saying that it is overseas made. But the
Delta 28-776 seems prefered to the 14" Ridgid by posters here.

But reviews searched on Google here at rec.woodworking praise the guide
assembly on the Delta.

Anyone here want to chime in on the Delta 28-276 vs. the Grizzly G0555? Or
even vs. the 14" Ridgid that is at Home Depot?

Thanks,
Grant

Looks like it is a tool in very good condition, thus the higher price. The
dealer may have a good reputation for selling quality items. You also have
people bidding close to or evenover retail. I don't know if they get caught
in the last minute frenzy or if they are just too stupid to do any homework.

If you like to tinker with machines, it may be a steal. You can buy tires,
the wheels may have to be balanced and aligned, bearing replaced, pulleys
replaced, guides, etc. Or you can put 50 hours and a couple hundred bucks
and still not be able to cut and follow a line. I don't know of this brand
and I've never rebuilt a bandsaw.

A new one is $450 on sale. They have been painted a cream color for the past
few years so this is at least four or more years old. Looks like very good
condition though; I'd pay up to $250 to $300 for it.

An hour ride is not bad. I mentioned shipping before and they offered a
cost estimator. This one is some distance from me and the shipping cost is
estimated at $200 plus crating. If you can't pick it up, eBay can be an
expensive way to buy.

Well thanks to everyone that replied and gave input. I looked at the Jets,
and the Delta at Lowes. And of course the Ridgid at Home Depot, and the
Craftsman at Sears. Never got to see the Grizzly in person.

But got myself a Very lightly used Delta 28-299 (American made) that came
with all "Limited Edition" goodies, still had the original blade on it, rip
fence, mobile base, vacuum attachment, and circle cutting attachment. It
runs very smooth. Needs a bit of retuning and a new blade. But even as I
got it it runs very good. I am very happy and think that I've got a saw
that will serve me very well for my lifetime of any band sawing chores that
I will probably do.

So far, I've used the 1/2" Timberwolf for re-saw work and a 1/4" for general
cutting and curves. Eventually I want to get 1/8" for tighter curves but
I've not had the need yet. I think those three sizes will get you 90%+ of
all your cutting needs.

Perhaps, if you live near the seller.

I looked at one of them and it is located in Utah, they will charge $75 to
strap it to a pallet, then you pay truck shipping on top of that. Aside
from the cost of the saw, I can see a few hundred $ to get it any distance.
Grizzly and Wilke Machine, etc, have good deals with truckers. Most small
dealers do not and moving a single pallet a thousand or more miles gets
rather pricey. You can buy a new Jet for the price of shipping and crating
alone.

Think before you bid.

Grant,

Consider the Grizzly G0555 (approx 375.00 USD). I've read a lot of
good things about it (and a few bad things, but mostly good). Search
rec.woodworking using google and you'll find some threads. If your
able to go a little over your budget, look at the Shop Fox G9970
(approx. 450.00 USD). Also, look around for sale prices, I've seen
the Jet 14" enclosed base BS on sale for 399.00.

I use the Jet fence. Others make a simple clamp on fence of their own. As
for the other "stuff" you must mean the miter. I used mine maybe twice.

The beauty of a bandsaw is cutting curves. No fence, no miter needed. You
can always add them later as the $$ becomes available.

Hi Grant,

Don't give up trying to find a good used BS like Delta. You need to
have some patience and luck, but one will turn up. When it does have
cash on hand and if it looks good to you don't wait...someone will be
waiting to snatch it up. I found my used Delta BS in the online
version of the LA Times classifieds. I called the guy up ASAP and told
him I'd show up with his money the next morning. I got a year old 14"
Delta with open stand, 1hp motor, miter gauge, fence, and mobile base
for $250.

Check Ebay, Penny Saver, online and local machinery dealers,
Woodworker West Magazine, newspaper, friends, family, etc. and one
will turn up. For $400 you can buy a really nice 16" BS. FWIW, I
bought my Dayton 10" drill press from a machinery dealer in Fullerton
that had it on Ebay. There's a SoCal machinery dealer that always post
nice stuff on Ebay (can't remember the Co.'s name though).

Good luck and happy BS hunting,

Layne

Therein likes the problem.

Mo matter what brand or tool and no matter what marketing and distribution,
the cheap saw is not going to have the same components and same finish as
the higher priced saws.

Differences are not always apparent. Thickness of materials in the
trunions, the web under the table, the spokes of the wheels that keep it
from deflecting. The motor just looks like a black can with a shaft, but
inside there is copper windings. It may have smaller bearing in the cheap
one. Drives may have a sloppier tolerance on balance.

Frankly, the better saws are in the $500 and up range. If I saw you, I'd
gat my ass over to Woodcraft today and take advantage of the 10% sale and
get the Jet 14" for $449 today. That is the minimum saw that I'd recommend
if you want quality.

I started out looking to spend less, but bought the Jet a couple of years
ago. I don't regret it.

For one thing, the Ridgid is ugly. Appearance aside, there won't be a huge
difference in use. The Delta looks to have a smaller footprint because the
motor is mounted under, rather than in back of the saw.

I've only take a cursory glance at the Ridgid. I've not seen this
particular model of Delta up close, but other Delta saws are much nicer fit
and finish. The Delta table is 16 x 16 while the Ridgid is only 14 x 14.
That can make a difference in how you handle and support your wood. The
Delta dust port seems to be in a better location also. I'd spend the extra
$20 for it, but that is just me.

of a Chiwanese clone of the Delta 14" band saw. In other

This about that. Believe me when I tell you that finding
and fixing up a good used machine can be a very satisfying
experience. Some even find out they like fixing up old
machines to be more fun than wooddorking. No really, it's
true and I will recommend this off shoot of the hobby to
anyone for just about any machine except for a Chiwanese
clone probably based on a Chiwanese clone of a Chiwanese
clone of the Delta 14" band saw.

Then on the other hand, for $15 you won't feel quite so bad
when you finally find and bring home a good band saw and you
can give this one the heel of your boot out the back end of
your pick up truck (with the Dale Earnhardt press on decal
in the back window).

I've only looked at Home Depot and Lowes. Home Depot has the Ridgid and
Lowes has a Delta for about the same price :

Can I do better than these? Which would be better this Delta or the Rigid?

If you've got 'yellow fever' check out a DeWalt 735 planer. You'll be
impressed how quickly and smoothly ittl plane your wallet. And you won't
be disappointed with what it does to wood either.

Thanks,

I did a little comparison a couple of weeks ago. IMO, the Delta has some
better features.

Buying used can be very good, but it depends on where you live. I've been
reading the local want ads for woodworking tools for three years. Rarely do
I see anything of interest. Could just be the area that I live in as other
seem to find some good deals.

I seriously doubt your story. To have EVERY portion of the saw fail is not
believable. Between my shop and friends' shops, I'll bet I have helped
assemble/use 20 Griz products, and have never ran into the problems you did.
Dollar Vs. value, you cannot beat them.

Ditto that. This one is in Utah. T'would make for a nice
"out 'n back" going to go and pick it up.

And so far it's still priced below what I paid for mine.

Yes, and this is what leads me to beleive that there are different styles of
the same model number. the newer one has the motor underneath.

Yeah I'm gunna pass on that one. I did a google search on that name and
found nothing.

How about this Delta in Las Vegas:

No mention of the condition or how much use, or damage. I know my wife
would like a trip to Vegas.

Last September I drove up to Muncy, Pa. to the Grizzly show room. My intent
was to purchase the 16" band saw. I was planning on getting the one with the
cast iron wheels. If you have never been to a Grizzly showroom do yourself a
favor and take a trip. That place is packed full of all kinds of machinery.
I ended up getting the 17" with cast alum. wheels. I works great, I use it
for resawing rough sawn 2x8 oak and walnut. I even use the cheap Grizzly 1"
blades. You can't push the stock through fast enough to bog down the motor.
I also have a Grizzly joiner and the 15" thickness planer. I couldn't be
happier with any of them. I started out with a crapsman cabinet saw, but
soon found myself sucked into the Unisaw mystique. I bought one about three
years ago. It's a great saw, but I have yet to do something on it that
couldn't be done on the Crapsmen. I have found that as long as the iron is
good, you can get anything to cut perfect. If you can't, you should hire
someone who knows what he is doing to set it up for you. The problems that
the other poster was whining about, was more than likely self inflicted. If
it wasn't Grizzly would have most certainly made it right. I even regret
selling the crapsmen table saw. It was working great but I finally convinced
myself that I needed the Unisaw. But then again, I convince myself a new
$400.00 drive will straighten out my golf game about every three or four
months. Currently I am on a Dewalt tool kick, can anyone give me a slap
along side the head to knock it out of me. Every time I see a yellow tool I
start reaching for my wallet.

Just curious. Is the 93.5" blade that the Grizzly uses a "Common" blade?

The more I look into these saws the better the Grizzly looks.

Is there a good but inexpensive aftermarket Mobile Base for the Grizzly
G0555? Grizzly wants $70 for theirs.
