I've been reading _Understanding Wood Finishing_ by Bob Flexner and in it he
discusses a couple of ways of finishing cherry. I'm not really set up to
spray, so I'm planning to follow the method that doesn't involve spraying.
Basically, he talks about using a gel stain (I'm using a Bartley Gel Stain
[not my idea]) and then an oil/varnish blend on top. I'm looking for
suggestions on an oil/varnish blend to use. I'm also open to anything else
that can be brushed/wiped. My preference would be wiping. I'm not in a big
hurry, and I think I might be able to get better results right now with
wiping, although I know it will take longer to build.

A wiping varnish or polyurethane is a good choice for an easy application
that provides protection. You can make your own wiping varnish or poly buy
thinning one to one with mineral spirits.
Check out http://benchmark.20m.com/articles/Finishing/woodfinishing.html
You also might try an oil and wax finish. It provides decent protection and
it is easy to repair. My favorite is Tried and True Varnish Oil. Check out

Jeff Jewitt wrote an article for FWW couple of years ago about Sherwin
Williams Fast Dry Oil Varnish applied with Viva paper towel. IIRC
varnish and naptha 1:1 and wipe on with quarter folded towel. Three
coats in a day. Use gloss instead of satin to avoid stripes. Works
great. www.homesteadfinishing.com used to have search capability but
I haven't looked since the site has been redone.

I always use Waterlox tung oil varnish on cherry projects. IT's easy to
wipe on, it is absolutely beautiful and it's very durable. Not as durable
as poly, but I like how it brings out the patina better than the poly seems
to. Just make sure you wipe off the excess.

Hello there,
A dead simple finish I really like is Polymerized Tung Oil.

The only thing I don't like about it is the price.
Read up on it, I think it is a super finish.
Thanks,
David.
Every neighbourhood has one, in mine, I'm him.
