Building drums

has anyone ever built a drum set or a single drum? i'm interested in
building a snare drum for myself and wanted to know how to go about
doing so. from things such as type of wood, shells,
staining/painting, drilling holes, etc. what type of sound do certain
types of wood produce? does anyone know of any woodworking
centers/schools in the chicago land area?

thanks in advance for your help.

Sorry, it's not Chicago.. You could research it a little deeper
than I did.

This site will serve as a useful starting point. There are a number of online sellers of shells, hardware, etc.
