newbie just wondering

I was just wondering, how much of the content on this sight is
woodworkers trying to help other woodworkers and how much just crap.
It seems, to my limited experiance, that after a question is posted
there are a couple of helpfull answers and then the pissing contest
starts. The point then seems to be telling the last guy how wrong he
was. I have a little time and a lot of knowledge to share. I'm sure
there are poeple out there that can help me with the problems I come
across. Is this a place to find answers or just a place to beat you
chest?

Larry,

I have been a member of this group for quite a while (several years). As
with any newsgroup, there are always problems. However, compared to a year
ago, there wasn't near the flaming, crossposting and general crap. I have
been tempted to stop checking in, but I found that if you ignored certain
people and their posts and ignored the blatant crudity of some posts, that
underneath, rec.woodworking still is a good place to be. I myself feel that
I have something to offer to other woodworkers and I have helped others with
their questions. Alternately, I have posted numerous times with a problem I
was having and not once did I not receive valuable help and information
(Thanks fellow "wreckers"). Yes, unfortunately, a few knowledgeable posters
have left to the detriment of the group. I am hanging in.

Hopefully, you will stay in and contribute. And, hopefully, you will also
find it mutually beneficial. Set your filters to "KILL" and enjoy.

Welp, we usually start with your spelling and grammar ... it is "site", not
"sight"' "just crap" is missing the leading "is", and "you chest" should be
"your chest". There are a few more, but we'll let those slide for the time
being.

... Just kidding!

Why don't you try and post your questions, then just weed through the BS ...
tis what the rest of us have to put up with, whether we are givers or
recipients of helpful advice.

New to rec.woodworking or new to the Web?

If you were experienced in news groups/ forums/ mail lists you would
know this is the nature of the beast.

I don't think it's going to change for you.

I was on one list where this one person signed on stating where he had
all this experience and if anyone challenged him he would be gone. LOL.
In his posts he had a wealth of information. In my 20+ years of
experience in the subject I knew it was nothing that couldn't have come
from books and magazines.

Posers suck.

By bitching about the pissing matches I must say you have made a fine
introduction and just made yourself a target of the pissers. Nature of
the beast.

I will say the only time I have found filters/ killfiles of use is
against spam. No need to put anyone on a list, just don't open their
messages. And if you do open one of their messages no ones putting a gun
to your head and making you answer. Remember, it's not a pissing match
till both players got their members out of their pants.

These are general tips on "surviving". They are not specific to the Wreck.

In general it is the place to ask. Don't let the 'holier than thou'
'wanna-be' crowd scare you away. The rest of us usually ignore them.
They are living proof God made more horses butts than he did horses.

You have answered your own question. About 10-20% of the posters on
most newsgroups are really able to be helpful, another 30% will tell
you to google for the answer and the rest just bicker. The few that
are really helpfull will stick around and form the core of he group,
they will always be here, others come and go as they get tired of the
bickering and name calling or if they lose interest.

As they say, there is no such thing as a free lunch. An unfortunate truism
when you are dealing with a large group. There is a lot of useful
information to be had and time will help you weed it out. It's just a matter
of how much your willing to pay for the good stuff.

I can't believe you would.... No, really, as with an intenet venue you will
have trolls, people who feel better making themselves look smart in the
wrong forums, but folks here are really helpful. There are several
published authors that frequent here, Charlie Self being a really good.
JOAT hits upon some really interesting sites, Tom Plamann has real talent, I
can go on and on. As with anything, watch what folks are helpful and which
aren't and read posts accordingly. Use the block feature supplied by your
browser as needed and read on. Good ideas abound!

Larry, I get plenty of useful information off the Wreck. I also see a
lot of BS, but that's the nature of a newsgroup with such a diverse
number of individuals posting to it. Sometimes the signal to noise
ratio is lower than I'd like, but hey, nothing or no one is perfect,
lest of all me. I endure the insults and disagreements for the "pearls
of wisdom" that come my way often enough to make it worthwhile...
