Bandsaw shopping

Hi,

I posted a message asking for experiences with the Grizzly 18" bandsaw
and got no replies. Quiet owners I guess.

However, I've been browsing around a bit and noticed that Laguna is
selling the LT14 for $895 plus shipping. This is certinly a smaller
saw than the Grizzly but I only have a 6" jointer and would anticipate
only ever upgrading to an 8" machine so the 8 5/8" resaw capacity
would seem adequate.

My question to you bandsaw users with similar jointing capacity is,
how often would you run into wanting to resaw more than 8" and does a
14" throat present undesirable limitations?

Also, I'd be interested in hearing from any LT14 owners
(good/bad/indeferent)

Matt

Matt,

Probably not a lot of Grizzly 18" owners here. As for resaw, I have a 6"
jointer and a Delta bandsaw capable of 12" resaw. I had a saw that would
cut 7-1/2" and got rid of it becuase it wasn't enough. You can successfully
joint a 12" board with a 6" jointer if you do it right, so having a 12"
resaw, 6" jointer and 12" planer works well in combination.

I guess it all depends on what you are doing with it to require whatever
resaw capacity you want. In my case, I don't do veneer - the capacity of
the saw is used for cutting small cants and logs into flitches, and usually
nothing thinner than 1/2" (drawer sides).

Have you checked with Griz? They have a reference program & there might be
someone with the saw in your area.

The larger the throayt the more desireable (as a rule). It allows you
to cut deeped into a piecs of wood. I like/own the Mini-Max S45 18"
and it MUCH supieror to the 14" Jet that I also own. It is sturdier,
quieter, stable. No, you normally will not us the whole 18" but when
you NEED it you NEED it. Agganzi is suppposed to be the best,
Laguna/Mini-Max next and then Jet. Frequently Laguna Tools will have a
used saw which is where/how I picked mine up.

Our club, the Long Island Woodworkers' CLub, assembled and reivewed the Grizzly
14" Ultimate bandsaw. We thought it an excellent buy.

Check out the website at www.liwoodworkers.org. It's in one of the newsletters
(there is a link inside the newsletter for more photos), I just don't temember
which issue.

I will add that there is, in fact, a practical limitation to this logic that
bigger bandsaws are better. I had a nice 38" Oliver for a while before I
decided it took up more room than I had to spare. It also weighed somewhat
over a ton so it had limited mobility. Big band saws are really great, but one
has to have a plenty of space and logical reason to have one. I presently have
a common 14" saw. It works for most things, but once in a while I miss the big
machine.
