I stand corrected on the Behr Alkyd Varnish product. It is Called " Clear
Lac" and on the can it is described as the "best of both lacquer and
varnish". While the can, like most finishes stops short of telling you what
it is composed of, I had identified it many years ago prior to its use on my
projects in Michael Dresdner's book on finishes. He had a chart in the book
listing various formulations by brand name and had indicated that this
product indeed was Alkyd Varnish.
I hope this helps the original poster.

Leave it to the finishing companies...a product called "Clear Lac"
that is neither laquer OR shellac.
I hate those guys!

Um, . You can also use plain ole paint thinner if the Finish is an Alkyd
Paint.

Quite true, hence the smiley.
That said, properly loading a paintbrush means there is paint/varnish
all the way up the bristles. After a couple of hours work, things tend
to gum up. Lacquer thinner is a bit more agressive than plain mineral
spirits, and works better for me. Yeah, it is more expensive, but I
have been recycling the same quart of lacquer thinner for the better
part of a year. I do use an extra ounce or so for a final clean after
completing the grunt work with the recycled thinner.
