I remember a couple of years ago reading "Band of Brothers"
by Stephen Ambrose. I wrote to him and said it made me
seek out a couple of the guys I served with in the 'Nam".
And thanked him for writing a very wonderful book. Recommend
it to everyone who ever served and to those who never did.

Anyways, I heard back from one of his assitants who said that
he was glad I like the book and was happy that I could connect
to my fellow comrades. And the best was this:

"Welcome home".

Broke me up and still does. So I'd like to say to all the vets, the
same:

"Welcome home"

As a whole, the Corps today is better trained and better led than when
I was in. Now, we're getting a 2600 man elite within an elite, most of
whom will be stationed at LeJeune. IIRC, they'll work on cooperation
with Seals and Army Special Forces, as well as on their own.

given another decade and a half with no interference, something he had

Seems like it, doesn't it, if your buddy Bush was right this time. The
fact remains, regardless of what any of those you 'quoted' said, that
none of them instigated an attack on a nation that had not attacked us.
Bush did. He has since waffled his way into other rationales for
removing Saddam, most of which are legimate reasons for hating the SOB,
but not for removing him.

As someone said recently, back during our Civial War, how would we have
felt if the Brits and the Germans (as then constituted) had attacked us
because of the turmoil we created and the danger we presented to other
nations?

I hold great concern for their well being. But there is a proper way
to do a job, and this wasn't it. Even the Military had reservations -
but they were quashed. Additionally, all societal changes do not
occur at the barrel of a gun - it generally only exacerbates a bad
situation. How would you have felt, as a citizen of the US during the
civil war, if France or Spain had decided to quell the unrest that
existed here? You would have taken up arms, and with every fibre of
your being, defended your homeland against an unwelcome invader.

Bush, et al, on the other hand, and truly being the little man you can
say 'never drew a bead' as you put it, is the type who doesn't think,
doesn't listen to those who do, and never had a plan in his entire
life. His own father had a far better grasp of the complex situation.
The bromide claims that genius always skips a generation, but as
asseveration we see the father, in contrast, as a paragon of wisdom.
And I scowl at the shadow he casts upon me with heightening disdain.

And to any other Vets, I'm _really_ sorry. I'm done.

over population centers, artillery projectiles loaded with binary chemical
agents, etc. Assuming Irag had no WMD because only small caches were
recovered after Operation Iraqi Freedom began is perilously flawed logic.
That, in no way, affirms what he spirited out through Iran and Syria before
OIF.

It is unconcienable to do anything but to honor the lives of those lost on
11 September 2001 by fighting with our vast resources and the unyielding
vigor of this great nation.

any patient contact - I do research on things that will hopefully someday
help prevent/cure heart attack and stroke, or at least provide insight
into what would.

I was born in Holland in 1944, and there isn't a day I don't thank the
veterans of WWII, and *all* defenders of freedom as we know it.

I remember visiting the monuments in northern France from WWI, and of
course walked many a walk for the Airborns from the battle of Arnhem in
September 1944, fought near where I grew up.

That having been said, *and* with my utmost admiration to those fighting
today, I must also vent my disgust at those who got us into today's Iraq
war under (IMHO) false pretenses. It is inexcusable for a commander to
not know what he is up against. It is also inexcusable for him not to
have a workable plan to help the people "liberated" from a vanquished
dictator onto the new road to freedom and liberty and justice as we know
it.

In my opinion, the executive is responsible for the correctness of the
information upon which he acts. In this case all the evidence now
suggests (again, IMO) that there was selection into what to believe, to
say the least. However, this isn't even the most important point in my
evaluation of the wrongness of going to war.

The executive is also responsible for ascertaining that the action plans
are laid out well, and they were very, very poor on multiple fronts
(pardon the pun).

The executive failed to get help at the Northern "front", i.e. failed to
get permission from Turkey to invade the north from their territory (the
plans had really counted on getting that help, and much improvisation was
now needed, leading to enormously long lines of supply).

Worst of all, and the reasons why this war is taking so long, is the
complete and utterly incomprehensible lack of a plan to get Iraq secure
and governable after the military defeat. Way before the war was started
this was a clear and plainly visible threat: There was no real help to
get a governing body together from the squabbling factions in exile;
there was (apparently) no US plan to get civil and military order under a
new Iraqi government; there was no idea about how to organize the many
and powerfully differing ethnic and religious groups into politically and
effective civilian organization. In addition, the invasion was woefully
underpowered (in large part because of the failure to get Turkey
involved) resulting in enormously big ammo dumps laying unguarded for
long times. All this allowed the "insurgents" to organize and sequester
means.

Although I was very much against the invasion of Iraq, I am now forced to
support the troops there. It is possible that the only way out would be
to involve initially many more US troops to secure the areas that need
securing, and to educate the Iraqi security forces, and last but not
least, to give the Iraqis time to institute a viable form of democracy.

One last (wishful) thought: Wouldn't it have been better to get more
involved in Afghanistan, really hunt down the SOBs there, while helping
to rebuild the Afghani infrastructure (both physically and politically)
while containing Sadddam, who was no real friend of Al-Quaida, within
Iraq?

I went through university in Utrecht - MS in Biochemistry. Then I had to
choose between the compulsory military service of ~20 months, or go to
the US and work as a lab technician with the work counting for a PhD back
in Holland. Simple choice. Once in Boston, there was no going back. In
76 we moved to the NY City area, where I still work now (lab is in the
VA, appointment is at Cornell Medical College.

The war may not be waging on the soil of your choice, but that is only
because the war is of a different nature than that of the past. Those that
declared the war aren't enclosed by the boundaries of government. The fatwa
issued in February of 1998 states that:

"The ruling to kill the Americans and their allies -- civilians and
military -- is an individual duty for every Muslim who can do it in any
country in which it is possible to do it."

"We -- with Allah's help -- call on every Muslim who believes in Allah and
wishes to be rewarded to comply with Allah's order to kill the Americans and
plunder their money wherever and whenever they find it. We also call on
Muslim ulema, leaders, youths, and soldiers to launch the raid on Satan's
U.S. troops and the devil's supporters allying with them, and to displace
those who are behind them so that they may learn a lesson."

While these are clearly not the teachings of the Holy Qur'an, the fatwa was
issued to incite a war. It did.

The losses on 11 September 2001 are listed here. It was the third deadliest
day in American history. Only the losses in the Galveston hurricane of 1900
and the Battle of Antietam in 1862 were deadlier.

Our government chose where the war front should be. I'll agree with that
tactic. That agreement was not just with the Executive Department.

Sens. Ted Kennedy, Harry Reid and Dick Durbin have accused President George
Bush of lying about Iraq's Weapons of Mass Destruction, insisting he "lied
us into war." They are even floating the suggestion that he be impeached.

Here are their accusations:

"The Bush administration misrepresented and distorted the intelligence to
justify a war that America should never have fought." --Ted Kennedy

"We all know the Vice President's office was the nerve center of an
operation designed to sell the war and discredit those who challenged it.
... The manipulation of intelligence to sell the war in Iraq...the Vice
President is behind that." --Harry Reid

"I seconded the motion Sen. Harry Reid made last week. Republicans in
Congress have refused, despite repeated promises, to investigate the Bush
administration's misuse of pre-war intelligence, so Senate Democrats are
standing up and demanding the truth." -- Dick Durbin, who recently compared
U.S. troops to the Nazis and Pol Pot.

Naturally, the Democrat's media lemmings are reporting these charges as de
facto truth, but there is considerable evidence that these Demo-gogues and
their colleagues believed Iraq had WMD long before President George Bush
came to Washington. Here is a small sample of that evidence from the Clinton
years:

Bill Clinton: "If Saddam rejects peace, and we have to use force, our
purpose is clear: We want to seriously diminish the threat posed by Iraq's
weapons of mass destruction program."

Madeleine Albright, Clinton Secretary of State: "We must stop Saddam from
ever again jeopardizing the stability and the security of his neighbors with
weapons of mass destruction."

Sandy Berger, Clinton National Security Advisor and Classified Document
Thief: "[Saddam will] use those weapons of mass destruction again as he has
ten times since 1983."

Harry Reid: "The problem is not nuclear testing; it is nuclear weapons. ...
The number of Third World countries with nuclear capabilities seems to grow
daily. Saddam Hussein's near success with developing a nuclear weapon should
be an eye-opener for us all."

Dick Durbin: "One of the most compelling threats we in this country face
today is the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. Threat
assessments regularly warn us of the possibility that...Iraq...may acquire
or develop nuclear weapons."

John Kerry: "If you don't believe...Saddam Hussein is a threat with nuclear
weapons, then you shouldn't vote for me."

John Edwards: "Serving on the Intelligence Committee and seeing day after
day, week after week, briefings on Saddam's weapons of mass destruction and
his plans on using those weapons, he cannot be allowed to have nuclear
weapons, it's just that simple. The whole world changes if Saddam ever has

Nancy Pelosi: "Saddam Hussein has been engaged in the development of weapons
of mass destruction technology, which is a threat to countries in the
region, and he has made a mockery of the weapons-inspection process."

Sens. Levin, Lieberman, Lautenberg, Dodd, Kerrey, Feinstein, Mikulski,
Daschle, Breaux, Johnson, Inouye, Landrieu, Ford and Kerry in a letter to
Bill Clinton: "We urge you, after consulting with Congress and consistent
with the U.S. Constitution and laws, to take necessary actions, including,
if appropriate, air and missile strikes on suspect Iraqi sites to respond

handed eight years worth of intelligence analysis and policy positions from
the Clinton years -- you know, the years of appeasement when Saddam was
tolerated, when opportunities to take out Osama bin Ladin were ignored, as

its head on 9/11.

You rightly point out many reasons why it was unwise to approach the
subject of Saddam in the manner that the US military was forced to do.
And it is probably best reflected by Bush's response upon looking at
Brazil for the first time on a map (LAST WEEK), "Wow. Brazil is Big!"
