Tool Porn

Did anybody else get the latest Japan Woodworker catalog in the mail? Boy, I
found LOTS of stuff to slobber over in that thing! Also, the look and feel is
very "Lee Valley-ish". Robin, if you're listening you might want to keep a
watchful eye on these guys. :-)

Nope. Sushi chefs are fanatical about their knives, and they'll pay
16.28 million yen for a freakin' tuna and cut it up to eat raw, fer

I'm with F/N.

$12.50 won't even touch a Ginsu these days, much less something of
quality.

$125.00 maybe.

Makes NO sense as I don't see Milwaukee in that lineup. <G>
I find that Milwaukee is probably the most consistent across the board
in terms of quality/price with few exceptions...if any.
Also missing is Ridgid, a brand which also gets many things right,
although not nearly as consistent as Milwaukee. Their 2610 ROS was
made by Metabo in Germany and it became the 2611 made in China and
might as well have been made on another planet as the quality was the
one component they omitted completely. Bushings vs bearing etc. etc.

I think most here agree that many brands have a few tools that stand
out (Bosch jigsaw, Makita belt sander etc.)
Only one brand has perfection across the board and that is
Festool...except one thing...price...some of their tools are just
plain nuts, like their cordless drill, routers...just too farking
expensive to compete..... that Kapex mitresaw... come ON with that
shit already.... (I want one).....

Yup. I'm sure there's a number 0f reasons why someone might buy a $1250
knife. And, that's aside from all the practical reasons that owning a top
quality product brings, such as a sharp edge that holds really well. Maybe
it's just the bragging rights that someone would buy one or perhaps just the
drive to own and use top quality products

Hell, look at some of the tools on the Bridge City Tools website. How about
a limited edition shoulder plane for $2200?

They had on display, at the Liquor Store, a bottle of Some-Kinda-
Stoopid-Money cognac. $ 2200.00
I asked if they ever sold any here, in this town. He named some of the
people that had indeed bought a few and they were always as a gift.
One case I knew about where, on a tip, a local real estate broker made
1.2 mil on a property flip. He send one of those bottles to the guy
who gave him the tip... that and a box of Monte Cristos.
It's all relative. All you got to do is move the decimal point around
for it make sense. For instance, I would have sent somebody a 22
dollar bottle of plunk for a tip that made me a few shekels.

I haven't seen it in their recent catalogs, but they used to offer a
Sushi knife, for $1250.00. I went in to the store once and asked to
see it; they lady behind the counter told me that they had none in
stock, and that it was on of their highest selling items.

I've been collecting their blue steel bench chisels for a few years
I've got 7 - 8 now. FWW ranked them "Best" a couple years ago.

They are fine tools.

Sounds like a misplaced decimal. I'd believe $12.50.

I don't know the quality of a knife at that price, but I can say that
the difference between a $10 knife and a $100 dollar knife is amazing,
$200 gets marginally better, I suspect a diminishing ROI.

To bring it back on topic though, it would be like comparing Ryobi and
Festool, sure they both have a place in the market, they will both
drill/sand/cut whatever. I personally am not in the Festool market, but
I would rather buy above the Ryobi market, all my tools are in the
Dewalt/Bosch/Makita range.

It wasn't supposed to be an exhaustive list, of the affordable middle
tier of tools, just some I personally have experience with. I do have a
Ridgid Miter Saw it has done everything I have asked of it.

Note: I am not a true woodworker, most of my stuff has just been for
around the house, including decks, fences, some small builtin cabinet
work, moving a wall or two and redoing a kitchen (I didn't build the
cabinets).

I've grown quite fond of the Wusthof "Classic" knives, and I've been procuring
them one by one on eBay as the opportunity arises and the budget allows. They
are NOT cheap, but they are clearly far superior to the set of Cutco knives my
wife bought some years ago (and those weren't cheap either), which now sit at
the back of the drawer collecting dust.
