As we all know, it's been pretty bad lately. More than once I have
though about dropping rec woodworking and going to a monitored newsgroup
- where the trash id filtered out. However, it has been a good group in
the past with a lot of good information sharing - I would really not
like to see it change.
Most of the trashy stuff comes from cross posting. Can the group be
changed so that cross posting is not allowed?

Make sure you specify whether regular-expressions are enabled
or not. It changes what will and won't work in the filter list, a lot.
I run with it on, but I've been using regex on Unix for 20+ years,
so I've grokked the paradigm.

... and leading the topic further astray. Here in Tuscon, the Humane
Society has started charging people who leave animals with them (doesn't
matter whether it's an animal you found, or your own, they charge you to
leave it with them). Seems that the incidence of dumped animals in Park
Service Parks has significantly increased in the last several months.
Park Rangers indicate they think this is purely coincidental and in no
way correlated to the Humane Society's new policy. In a completely
unrelated aside, dropoff of pets at the Humane Society has plummetted in
the past several months as well, but the Humane Society is attributing
that to the fact that it believes people are becoming more responsible
pet owners and having their animals neutered, thus reducing the number
of unwanted pets. Makes one want to jump up, bang some heads and yell,
"ARE YOU STUPID, OR WHAT!?"

The reason that nobody is posting the dat files is to make it harder for
the trolls. If you are serious, send me an e-mail with a real name and
e-mail addy that isn't munged and I'll send you a copy. Mine is fairly
long because I'm preserving the iterations that didn't work so that I
can try to avoid repeating erors in coding. As a result it looks like
spaghetti code. But it works, and that's what counts.

It does appear to filter out crossposted messages ... someone who has been
running it more than 10 minutes may be able to answer that better. But so
far I like what I _don 't_ see.

It is not "hard to do" at all, but one of the reasons I started messing with
computers 30 years ago was to get away from doing those things by hand that
a computer does so much better.
IOW, if you can spend a few minutes configuring a piece of software to do
the job, it's been my experience that you generally end up saving a hell of
a lot more time in the long run

Which brings me to an interesting point (note the OT in the subject
line).
I went out to our partially-lattice-enclosed-porch this morn at 5am
where we lock our cats up at night. Had heard a loud "thunk".
3 !@#$%!#$%#$ raccoons eating the catfood. And they didn't leave
easily...namely until I threw chunks of wood at them (_there's_ the
relevance to rec.ww!) and turned the hose on. Which got one of the
cats too. Oh well.
Given I live in a suburban area, my first impulse to snap the 'coons
with a .22 pistol were nixed. (as well as anything of larger
caliber). This isn't the first time they've visited - just the first
time we've cought 'em in the act.
Any suggestions? I don't want to kill any other neighborhood cats
with poison. I was thinking a .22 pellet rifle or somesuch -
subsonic, nice and quiet. Or how quiet are those remmington .22
subsonic rounds? .22 caps (what they are I don't know, just came
across some) Quiet enough to pass for a door slam or somesuch?
Completely OT and probably should be posted to rec.guns or
misc.firearms or somesuch

We did actually remove the bag 'o cat food. However, the kitty's are
strickly outdoor creatures so removing their food isn't the best
option. And heck, I have to admit a sort of vengeful desire for the
'coons invasion of my territory. (must be all those violent computer
games I played as a kid...) Not to mention I'm sure they're being
just as obnoxious to all the neighbors.
Father-in-law suggested calling animal control to trap them. Least
investment on my part, so I may try it.
The nice gentleman at the sporting goods store advised me against the
.22+low velocity remington round solution. (kinda illegal in the city
limits. Someone else mentioned silencers - yes, they're legal in
Idaho but require a $200 fee to Uncle Sam, registration, note from
your local sherrif saying you're not a felon, background check, etc.
Same process to own a fully automatic weapon. Not my preferred
route.) He recommended a $99 remmington (or was it winchester?) .177
air rifle that (drat) he was out of stock of. 1000fps and a nice
hollow point pellet should ruin their day.
The other suggested solution was a (no kidding) slingshot. One of
those wrist-rocket doohicky's with those big steel marbles. He
claimed to have seen many a pest "shot dead reel good" with 'em. I
might just pick one up and see if I can hit the broad side of a barn
first.
Anyway, thanks for the suggestions.

You're right about that. Simply eliminating all cross
posted articles and articles with a few key words in the
subject eliminates about 90% of the garbage for me.

I tried nFilter also with no luck. I am trying Gravity, a news reader,
now and it seems to be working quite well. It has tons of tweaking
capabilities and lets me filter cross posts but not necessarily all of a
posters comments, only the ones that he cross posted to.
Is there a news reader that simply filters out cross-posts? That would take

Depending on the error, double check the faq at the website. I had a
terrible time with the too many conections error and a would not connect
problem untilli realized that i had typed my news server info wrong and i
needed to check Allow external access in the Configuration settings for the
network.
Also the filters didnt work at first even though i copied them over. for
some reason they didnt copy to the nfilter.dat file, the program failed to
create it when i add new filters or at startup. so make sure the filters
are there in that file.

This is definitely the problem. I can stop the troll with a couple of mouse
clicks and take care of every post he makes under that name but it's all the
other crap that everybody keeps posting and replying to that's shut me down
to a crawl. I can't make Nfilter work and I've spent a ridiculous amount of

This isn't anything new, crossposting, spamming, etc. has been with us
as long as Usenet has. Usenet is, for the most part anyhow,
unmoderated, uncontrolled and uncensored. Anyone who doesn't like
that shouldn't be here. Most people learn pretty quickly not to feed
the trolls, who are only out for attention and any responses they get,
the more upset the better, will just guarantee they come back for
more.
If you don't like a post, don't read it. If you feel it necessary to
block it, there is software that will do that. Otherwise, it only
takes half a second to go to the next post and ignore it. Whining
about it and responding only encourages the spammers and trolls to
keep it up, they're getting the reaction they crave.

It's kind of like moles in your yard. People go to all sorts of trouble
to get rid of them but don't stop and think. Why are the moles there?
Because they have a good food source. 90% of the time it's grubs in the
lawn. Put down diazinon and the grubs go away. The grubs go away and
the moles go away.
Now apply it to your problem. Why are the raccoons there? For the cat
food. Get rid of the cat food and the raccoons go away. Additionally,
if the raccoons are getting to it, so are the mice, possibly rats...
I'll check into Gravity.
I knew about FreeAgent and Forte Agent. I looked at Forte Agents web site
and the only mention about cross posting was that Forte Agent, but not Free
Agent, would recognize a cross post and not down load duplicate information.
I could find no info about filtering out cross posts..
Thanks

Are silencers or sound supprossors legal in your state? These combined with
subsonic .22's have been long used for pest control. They are kind of
expensive though.

I don't know about that but I do feel lost if I can't read the
newsgroup once a day. However, the porn and obscene language is
unreal.

Up to a point that makes since... but we are now having to spend a minute or
two "every time" we access the news group to block specific senders or
delete messages and that is a big deal for me.

look again Gary. They don't go away, feeding them doesn't help and blocking
them only results in different post strategies. He has a valid point.
Maybe we get whoever to do whatever so that can be done.

I got no error at all. The program ran in the back ground and I saw no
results.
