OT: Snow

I read the snow thread with amusement, only to come
out of my cave and realise there is as much as 5"
predicted for tonight and tomorrow in AL.

Groan... it's a mess here when it snows.

I'm sure the milk, bread and flashlight battery
hoarders have already cleaned out the stores.

We were in Arkansas earlier this year. They had a little snow (nothing
worth getting excited about in IL), but the roads were a mess. Even the
manditory off ramp of I540 (transition to US 71) was bad. As soon as we
crossed the state line into Missouri, the roads were perfect. It's all
about whether the DOTs know how to handle the stuff or not. Sand just
doesn't cut it on heavily trafficed roads.

Woodworking content: The drill/driver kit I got came with a flashlight
and two batteries. No need to buy flashlight batteries, just make sure
they're charged.

Well, it's "tommorow" here in AL. No snow but I'm thinking I should
have called in before coming in to work. It's an hour after our
normal starting time and I'm the only one here.

Sure. They used to do that even in NY. Not so much in VT because
even after a 12" snowfall the roads were all clear in less than four
hours. 24" may have taken a half day to clean up.

Turned out okay today, snow mostly melted as it fell, it could have been
much different if the temps had been 5 degrees cooler.

The snow we have in AL is always a wet snow and the temps generally drop
enough to freeze it right afterward, so you end up with a sheet of wet ice
on all the roads. Impossible to travel on, even with a four wheel drive,
and of course there is no salt or plows.

And it's coming to Atlanta - after two days of TV weathermen saying
"It won't be this far north". Bought bread and milk earlier in the
week beause we were out. Bought flashlight batteries while at Costco
today because there was one D cell left in my stock of batteries.

The emergency generator got its regular service last month (oil
change, sparkplug, etc) and a short run under partial load. Don't
anticipate using it, as the power has been out only a couple of times
in the past 5 years - longest about 2 hours.

Also have fuel for the kerosene heater, wood for the fireplace, and
fuel for the Coleman stove and lantern.

Some of the items are left from days of camping with the kids, some
from Y2K preparations (we lost power for a couple of days in an ice
storm in Jan 2000, so the kero heater proved to be a good investment).

The generator was a too-good-to-pass-up deal on Craig's list - used
5KW, price negotiated down to $80 (the seller could barely get it to
run), then spent about $60 in maintenance items.

This might even be wood-related - the generator is stored in a wooden
shed out back ;-)

********************************************************************************

In Central NY the roads are easily cleared after only a foot of snow. It
takes 3-4 feet before the crews start falling behind. More accurately, it
takes a snowfall rate of 5-6" per hour before they fall behind. That's a
snowfall rate that you can't even see through. At a foot - it's not even
really necessary to plow your driveway - you can easily drive through that.
And my driveway is 350 feet long. It's not desirable to walk through that,
so you plow it, but even with the drift at the end of the driveway from the
town plows, you can navigate it. Of course, we do plow at less, but again -
that is for convenience. At 3 feet, the plow truck is working to move the
snow. The last few years, we have not had a lot of overnight 3' snows, but
when we first moved here, it was more common than it was uncommon. The
truck will do it, but you're not just pushing a little snow around.

24" here does not take half a day to clean up.

My MIL and SIL live in Huntsville but are originally from NE Pa. They
really get a chuckle when everyone gets in a panic over an inch of
snow. They have said the same thing though, no salt or equipment to
handle the winter.

Yup, it's officially recognized now, this weather is all
obamas' fault! Those old timers on the farm were right
when they said " it'll be a cold day in hell when a
colored man is voted president"! They were right
because right now all 50 states have snow! What better
proof is there? heh heh ...;>)) phil

It didn't start snowing in Auburn until after 10:00AM and we only got
2" or so. The fear was just silly. 5F wouldn't have made much if any
difference.

Yep. We're a couple of hundred miles South and East of Huntsville
(100Mi SW of Atlanta). We moved down here from Vermont in '08 and
laugh at the locals fear (not that I want to meet any of them when
driving in snow). They closed the company where I work at 9:30PM the
night before (didn't start snowing for 12 hours). I woke up to no
snow so went into work. The only other person there was the marketing
director trying to get some stuff out for trade shows. What a bunch
of wusses. -)

If this was an attempt at humor, it is very bad.
if it is showcasing your bigotry, good job.
