steel city table saw on the way!

SO....I have a new Steel City table saw on order and should be
delivered soon. This will be my first cabinet saw and my current
contractor saw is literally older than I am...and I am not young by
any means.

Anyway, it's one of the granite top ones...has anyone out there got
one and if so, any tips or tricks to setting it up?

I have indicators and straight edges and feeler gages out the
ying-yang...I'm a toolmaker by trade.

It'll be going in a basement on a Steel City mobile base. It's not
going mobile because I want it to, but because I have a VERY small
shop. 10.5 X 26 and there are lots of other toys...errrr....much
needed machinery down there.

Thanks

Mike

Nice buy. Just check\adjust the blade to the miter track and try to get it down below 2 thou alignment front to back. Then set the fence to the same miter track. Then let er rip... pun intended.

Scratch that post. The "Joy" instrumental was on the ad, preceeding
the Radioactive song. I wasn't paying attention.

That most surely is true. "What A Wonderful World" as performed by
Louis Armstrong is one of them.

"Radioactive" is not one of them.

Compare these lyrics:
Well I'm not uptight, not unattracted. Turn me on tonight, cause I'm
radioactive.
There's not a fight and I'm not your captive. Turn me loose tonight,
cause I'm radioactive.
I want to stay with you, I want to play with you, baby. I want to lay
with you, and I want you to know.
Got to concentrate, don't be distractive. Turn me on tonight, cause I'm
radioactive

With these:
I see trees of green, red roses too. I see them bloom for me and you.
And I think to myself, what a wonderful world.

I see skies of blue, and clouds of white, the bright blessed day, and
the dark sacred night.
And I think to myself, what a wonderful world.

The colors of the rainbow, so pretty in the sky, are also on the faces
of people going by.
I see friends shaking hands, saying, "How do you do?" They're really
saying, "I love you".

I hear babies cry, I watch them grow. They'll learn much more than I'll
ever know.
And I think to myself, what a wonderful world. Yes, I think to myself,
what a wonderful world.

The latter song has already stood the test of time, "Radioactive" never
will.

complete package.

Funny, I listen often to my local rock oldies station. I have NEVER
heard that song play.

> Still, I will admit that within the rock genre there are perhaps many

I will concede that "great" has a subjective component. However, if
100 million people think a song is great, that is a better indication
than if only one thousand do.

I HAVE heard these get radio time. Personally, I'd hold them up against
"Radioactive" any time. Since it is all subjective, feel free to
disagree. And even if you don't agree they're "great", if you like
oldies rock, sit back and enjoy anyway.

Not quite, it's a good rock version of the baroque classical piece,
Bach's Cantata 147, Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring.
Here it is about the way Bach originally wrote it. (Don't listen to it
and drive at the same time.)

Kind of supports my contention that "fear appeal marketing" by competitive
products is at play... i.e., your reference from solidsurfacealliance.org.
;~)

The a priori (and a posteriori) solution to this, and myriad other home
sourced illnesses, is active air turnover. The tight homes of today need
fresh air intakes... Closed up basements full of ground sourced radon are a
big problem in some areas. Having a negative-pressure radon management
system is demanded in some cases whereas in others the draw from dryers and
flame heated appliances (furnaces, boilers, hot water heaters) sucks enough
air out of the basement, while drawing in air through gaps (basement
windows, sill plates, cracked mortar joints, garage doors, etc.) to keep the
levels down. Bath and kitchen power ventilation helps as outside air is
pulled into the house via gaps.

If the air replacement is great enough, radiation, allergen and antigen
levels don't build up to the point where they present health problem greater
than background levels. As such, fresh air intakes with air-to-air heat
exchangers are well worth considering in tight homes... that and getting rid
of the dogs, cats, gerbils, smokers, bad cooking, carpets, man-made wood
products, plastics, polyester fiber fill, woodshops, and other things that
out gas and pollute interior air. ;~)

Be careful removing the miter gauge from the T slot - you can crack
the granite very easily. Also, that fricker is damn heavy...

Finally, if you want to father any more kids, keep your "boys" away
from the top. Saw an article about granite from China being
radioactive... NOT kidding...

I have one, and every time I rip a board and lean up against the saw I

That's where the whole area of subjective assessment comes in. I have the
most profound respect for a number of past musicians and vocalists, but I
don't necessarily like one thing they did. Not my style. They don't get me
humming along, or tapping my foot... in fact, they can have me waiting
impatiently for the song to end. Just does not hit me. Other music, which
some might consider to be lesser, strikes me much more where I live, and
ranks among the greatest for me. Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd would be
one of those songs. To me - absolutely one of the greatest songs ever. To
others - maybe not so much. Likewise, for me Sing Me Back Home by Merle
Haggard - one of the greatest ever. There - how's that for two opposite
ends of the spectrum?

I got in the habit of pushing the miter gauge and tennon jig off the back of
the saw and onto the outfeed table when I remove them and vice versa. This
so I don't bugger things up and have good control over them. This technique
might be especially useful with the granite top.

Sure sounds like competitive product marketing at work... that or if we are

It might just be possible that there is more than one great song in the

You're comparing apples to oranges, and you're also comparing just the lyrics,
not the complete package. They are both "great" songs within their own genres.
Within the rock genre, "Radioactive" has already stood the test of time; it
came out almost thirty years ago and is still well recognized and gets radio
play today, and I'd be willing to bet that that will still be true thirty or
more years from now. Still, I will admit that within the rock genre there are
perhaps many MANY other songs that are more deserving of the "great"
description (notice I didn't describe it as a "GREAT" song), but the fact that
it still gets radio play and didn't wither away into obscurity two months after
its release means at least something.

Funny, I didn't expect to start such a stink by describing "Radioactive" as a
"great song". Though it does make me tap my feet and bob my head, it does NOT
make me feel the way Satchmo does when he sings "It's a Wonderful World".
Perhaps that can serve as my apology for stepping on YOUR idea of a "great
song". :-)

There's a lot more to a song than lyrics. In any case, arguing about
music is like arguing about women or ice cream flavors. It's pretty
pointless. Everybody likes different things. There is no "bad' music. If
someone likes it, it's good... to them. That's all that matters. This
isn't an objective matter like needing exterior glue for an outdoor
project. This is like "what color should I make it."

What I really can't stand, however, is the arrogance of someone who
feels the need to interject their own opinion to put down another
person's choice in something as completely subjective as music.
Pathetic. I have never tolerated that and never will.

Now THAT, in my humble opinion, is a GREAT song, regardless of the fact that
the lyrics are about as far away from "It's a Wonderful World" as you can get.
There are other songs I would put in the GREAT category where the lyrics have
practically no meaning whatsoever; they are used almost entirely for their
sonic and rhythmic qualities, yet somehow they also seem to trigger thoughts of
achieving greater things. Or something like that. :-)

In any case, this discussion has led me to conclude that this is a great life,
and that this IS a Wonderful World, and as such I've been singing "Radioactive"
for the past two days. Thanks -MIKE-. :-)

Yeah, I've been trying to do better at that. As time goes on I've been seeking
to reduce the amount of stress in my life. I'm sure you're familiar with the
definition of stress to which I'm referring: "The confusion caused when the
mind tries to override the body's desire to choke the living shit out of some
asshole who desperately needs it". :-)
